First and foremost, it's important to express the sadness, shock and helplessness we feel by what has happened in the city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Our thoughts and prayers are with the residence and helping hands that are there now. But unfortunately, that can't even begin to address the devastation that country is experiencing.
Being so far away and watching this tragedy unfold, it's amazing how much information you can get as it happens via social media. Modern day media outlets can push out information in near real time, including pictures, videos, stories of tragedy and stories of hope. Even the Red Cross has set up a blog that is updated three to four times a day with posts on what is transpiring, what is needed and how you can help.
Social media's role in this tragedy continues to grow as monetary donations are instantly being gathered from mobile phone users. MSNBC has reported that within 36 hours, more than $7 million has been raised via text message (and counting) to provide aid to Haiti. While they say money doesn't fix everything, in this situation, money is essential in helping the Red Cross and other organizations get this country the support it needs, hopefully save lives and eventually rebuild.
What can you do?
For anyone that is interested, you can donate $10.00 to the Red Cross right from your cell phone by texting HAITI to 90999. All providers are donating 100 percent of the proceeds, and the charge will show up on your next bill.
