One of my hobbies is doing set designs for my church Prairie Ridge in Ankeny. It's a relatively new hobby I started just before Christmas. With the help of some friends we've completed two sets so far and are currently working on the third. There is a lot that goes into these sets, including brainstorming ideas, planning, getting volunteers, purchasing supplies, construction, reconfiguring of lights and finally pulling it all together... quickly. It's been a great challenge for many reasons. First: it's new territory for my creative skills. Second: I need to be resourceful with the materials I use from a financial standpoint. Third: it can consume my thoughts for a few weeks as it comes down to set-up time.
Anyway, the current set I am working on is what I call a "generic" set. It’s not theme-based but instead is a set that will hopefully get some reuse in between future set designs. The first part of this set involved creating luminaries using coroplast, a par 38 light with an orange gel, and a custom wooden box to mount the light and coroplast too. The luminaries are 1'x1'x4' each and we made 4 of them over the last few days. They turned out great! There is a little bit of tweaking I will need to do on the design to restrict the amount of light that leaks out of the back where the seams come together. But for roughly $5 each for supplies (not including the light) I couldn't be happier with the overall look of them.
Over the course of this next week, I hope to complete the last part of this set which is a back wall also constructed with coroplast and lights that should be wicked cool when done. I will post a picture of that once it’s complete.

Here are some pictures of the two previous sets:
Amps & Lamps (named accordingly)

Winter Mural (unfortunately I don't have a picture of it constructed on the stage)
